Dr. Mitch Oviatt
Dr. Mitch Oviatt grew-up in Sherwood Park, Alberta. His family has always had horses, and his parents still own a little ranch on the Waterton River west of Glenwood that has been in the Oviatt family since 1935. Dr. Oviatt obtained a B.Sc. Agriculture degree from the University of Alberta with a major in Animal Science before starting a Master’s degree program in beef cattle nutrition at Oregon State University. One year into his graduate studies, he was accepted into veterinary school at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (University of Saskatchewan). During his final year, Mitch completed an external equine reproduction rotation at McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital, in Spokane, WA. It was there that he gained some valuable experience with artificial insemination, semen collection and shipping, and equine embryo transfers. He obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2006, and spent his first year working in Lethbridge. In 2007, Dr. Oviatt returned to McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital and spent two years there as an associate veterinarian. It was a tremendous professional opportunity for him to learn from and work alongside Dr. Jed McKinlay—one of the most respected and reputable equine reproduction veterinarians in the Pacific Northwest—and Dr. Bob Peters—a farrier-turned-performance horse lameness veterinarian and equine dentist. Dr. Oviatt and his wife, Geneil returned to Alberta for good in 2009, and recently built a house in Stirling. They have two boys and three girls. Dr. Oviatt has special interests in equine dentistry, reproduction, and wound management. One of Dr. Oviatt’s claims to fame while working in the US, was performing a dental float on “Idaho Gem”, a racing mule who was the world’s first equine clone!
